KU notebook: Jayhawks get to sleep in
Sleeping in
In Omaha, Kansas had to wake up at 7 a.m. for its 11:25 a.m. tipoff in the first round against Portland State. Now, in Detroit, the Jayhawks will be forced to sleep in extra late because of a 9:40 p.m. (Eastern time) tipoff against Villanova.
'Getting to sleep late is always good,' KU's Brandon Rush said.
For a change, KU coach Bill Self actually wants the Jayhawks to hit the snooze button.
'We'll try to let them sleep as long as they can that morning,' Self said, 'make it as short a day as possible.
'That is a ridiculous start time for anybody to play. I know the South region is playing at 9:57 (Eastern), but they're tipping in the Central time zone. We're starting an hour later than anyone else is, but that's the way it is.'
** The Jayhawks have run off nine straight wins since the players-only meeting they staged the Sunday after their loss to Oklahoma State.
At the meeting, KU aired out some of its frustrations. Looking back, Self was surprised it took his team until Feb. 24 to do it.
'I was very disappointed in the team,' Self said, 'and I let them know it, because they hadn't had one yet. That blows my mind that you got a group of guys ... you'd think there'd be some point in time where they'd all get together and talk about how things are going and getting better.'
** Kansas guard Rodrick Stewart, who missed Saturday's game because of tonsillitis, said that he is back to full strength. KU guard Sherron Collins, playing with two bruised knees, affirmed that he will be ready to go against Villanova.
