Pacers' Foster made event special as generous guest
Earlier this month, in Marion, Jeff Foster of the Indiana Pacers was gracious enough to be the honorary starter of the Collin J. Bowen Memorial Race/Walk, honoring my brother, Army SFC Collin J. Bowen, who died from injuries from an IED in Afghanistan. It was rainy, a long drive, early in the morning; and yet he was there, just as he had promised. Not only did Jeff start the race, he stayed afterward to sign autographs, take pictures and meet with all the attendees. He helped as we presented the Collin J. Bowen Memorial Scholarship to three graduating seniors. He handed out each of the 30 medals from the race and gave personalized Pacers flags to the male and female overall winners.
In sum, he went above and beyond to make the event special. He made me proud to be a Pacers fan. He also repeatedly mentioned that he was attending in honor of my brother's sacrifice.
Jeff didn't do this for media attention; I would imagine no one outside of Marion even knew he was there. But I can assure you, it will not be forgotten by the people there that day.
