Jayhawks say Brandon Rush has ACL tear
LAWRENCE | Kansas announced today that junior guard Brandon Rush has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The Star first reported Saturday that Brandon Rush, a junior guard, suffered ligament damage in the knee while attempting a lay-up at a Kansas City gym Thursday night. A magnetic resonance imaging test was administered Friday in Lawrence, but Kansas sent the results to a Denver specialist for a second opinion on the severity of the injury.
“The MRI report from last Friday confirms that Brandon Rush did tear his ACL,” KU coach Bill Self said in a prepared statement. “We did not announce the nature of the injury last week per Brandon Rush’s request. Friday was an emotional day for Brandon Rush as he had worked very hard in preparation for the NBA pre-draft camp. By law we cannot comment on an injury without a player’s consent.
“Brandon Rush is in good spirits and is presently rehabbing as he prepares for surgery this week or early next week.” KU issued a press release Friday announcing that Brandon Rush, a Kansas City native, would withdraw his name from NBA consideration. The release indicated that Brandon Rush's injury wasn't a factor in the decision, but John Walker, Brandon Rush’s former summer league coach and mentor, told The Star Friday evening that Brandon Rush's injury played a big role in why he chose to come back to school.
Because of the torn ACL, Brandon Rush would have been unable to compete at the Orlando pre-draft camp, which begins today and goes through June 4. Without a chance to perform in front of scouts and executives, Brandon Rush decided it was in his best interest to return to Kansas for his junior season.
